Compliance for Dental Waterlines

Written by DentistCare Risk Management Specialist | Oct 30, 2025 12:00:00 AM

Many states require compliance with CDC guidelines regarding dental waterline maintenance and monitoring. Currently, 33 state dental boards require compliance with CDC and EPA guidelines regarding dental unit waterline maintenance as part of their regulations. Some states are implementing regulations beyond the CDC guidance that dental professionals in those states will need to follow.

Here are some examples:
    • Washington State: Additional regulations have been implemented regarding waterline testing and water quality standards.
    • California: Legislation has been developed that requires dental unit waterline testing.
    • Georgia: Requirements have been implemented for dental unit waterlines, including using water meeting EPA standards, quarterly testing, and remedial action if testing fails. They also require continuing education on dental waterline safety.

There is a trend toward more states starting to evaluate and implement further regulations like what's happening in Washington, California, and Georgia. We recommend consulting your state dental board for specific regulations regarding dental waterline compliance.
