Mentoring and Training Students is an Honorable Endeavor – But Don’t Forget Patient Consent

The private dental office provides a highly effective environment for students seeking real-life practice experience. When given the chance, many dentists feel excited about giving back to their profession and contributing to the development of these young individuals. They may be trainee assistants, hygienists, or dentists. Working in a dental office can be life-changing for these individuals and incredibly rewarding for those fortunate enough to help train them.

Suppose you currently work with dental personnel in training or consider participating in this rewarding activity. In that case, you should reach out to your professional liability carrier and inform them of the nature of these engagements. Patients have a fundamental right to know and approve if a “dental personnel in training" will participate in their care. Having a consent conversation with the patient that clearly outlines the student’s involvement and obtains the patient’s affirmation of this arrangement is ethical and prudent. Here is an example of how the language in the disclosure conversation/consent might sound like:

<Name of entity> is participating in the training and mentoring of dental personnel students
<list the disciplines, for example, “Assistants, “Hygienists,” “Dental Students”>. This program
provides students with a variety of clinical experiences. Students are in various stages of their
training, with some already completing all clinical requirements for graduation.

The licensed staff at the <name of entity> serve as clinical instructors and directly supervise the student and your treatment to ensure the best possible treatment. This experience provides a valuable learning experience and feedback for the student, our staff, and yourself as the patient. Should you wish to ask any questions about your care or the program, please feel free to do so anytime.

educational experience.
